Silver Oak Academy hosts Parent Teacher Conferences
On March 18th, Silver Oak Academy hosted parent teacher conferences for the second semester of the 2011-2012 school year. The conferences are a regular event at Silver Oak Academy, because active parental involvement increases the student’s likelihood for classroom and transitional success. The strongest and most consistent predictors of parent involvement at school and at home are the specific school programs and teacher practices that encourage parent involvement at school and guide parents in how to help their children at home. This semester, 14 families arrived mid morning to greet their student, and to meet with his classroom teachers. “I had parents come into the culinary classroom and tell me how excited their son is about being in culinary. I tell them how I enjoy having their son in class, and what he has been doing” said Kay Davis, a Silver Oak Academy instructor. Designing effective forms of school to home communication is one step that we take to ensure we are providing an open and transparent educational environment. The conferences were open for five hours, as parents were eager to learn about their son’s progress, and to put teacher names to real faces. Based on parent survey feedback, the conferences were met with excitement and parents stated they were very pleased to have an opportunity to visit the classrooms.
